Summer 2020: COVID-19 Update from the Learning Center

Students, we understand this is a stressful time. We also understand that many students rely upon Learning Center tutoring and advising services to do well during their time at MAC. In order to continue to meet your needs while protecting you, personnel, and the communities MAC serves, we have updated our temporary procedures to handle COVID-19 safety concerns for the summer semester.

Specific policies for each of the Learning Center’s programs follow, answering specific questions we anticipate you may have. We suggest you bookmark this blog for future reference and to follow us on Facebook or Twitter for quicker updates.

EXCEL COVID-19 PANDEMIC PROCEDURES FOR SUMMER 2020

Tutoring Availability

EXCEL will conduct both online and face-to-face tutoring by appointment.

Our hours of operation are:

  • EXCEL staff are available to answer questions and schedule appointments from 8 am to 3 pm weekdays.
  • The EXCEL computer lab is open from 8 am to 3 pm weekdays.
  • Tutoring is available weekdays from 10 am to 2 pm or as otherwise arranged.

Online Tutoring

Online appointments are conducted through Zoom software. For details on how to prepare for an online session, please see our Zoom tutorial for Android users or for desktop/laptop users.

Face-to-Face Tutoring

For safety of you and the staff, please follow the following guidelines:

  • EXCEL will see students by appointment for tutoring or advising sessions.
  • MAC’s current policy is that students who come for face-to-face advising sessions should wear masks and gloves.
  • Please provide your own textbook, notebook, calculator, and writing implements.
  • Follow social distancing and sanitation guidelines as requested within the computer lab.

ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER (ARC) COVID-19 PANDEMIC PROCEDURES FOR SUMMER 2020

Tutoring Availability

ARC will conduct both online and face-to-face tutoring sessions by appointment only.

Our hours of operation hours are:

  • Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9 am to 1pm
  • Thursday from 1 pm to 6 pm.

You may book your appointment through our booking software.

If you are concerned about your safety, please consider using our online tutoring service.

We encourage students to utilize virtual sessions whenever possible during these uncertain times, but face-to-face socially distanced appointments are available. For important details about these services, please read on.

Face-to-Face Tutoring

For safety of you and the staff, please follow the following guidelines:

  • Please note that we will not serve walk-ins, for everyone’s safety. You must make an appointment.
  • You will be required to wear a mask during your session. Your tutor will also wear a mask.
  • Please email your essay and any instructor guidelines in advance of your session to arc@mineralarea.edu. If you do not, you will be directed to email this material upon your arrival. This is so the instructor can print out a fresh copy to work with.
  • You will need to take notes on your own copy. We will not be providing you with the tutor’s copy to minimize contact between student and staff.

IN CONCLUSION

COVID-19 has disrupted the operation of many services, and this can mean stress and inconvenience. We are doing our best to reduce both of those while helping everyone to stay healthy. MAC and the Learning Center are dedicated to supporting your education journey, and we are working hard at making sure this semester goes as smoothly as it can. That is why we suggest you revisit our blog and your MAC email account frequently for important updates.
